Passaic Street Bridge Replacement Project
For those who have been watching the progress at the bridge, the work has been consistently progressing since January. Initially, we were informed that the bridge would be closed to vehicles and pedestrians for approximately 12 months to complete the project. Based on the most current update, the contractor is projecting a late September, early October reopening of the bridge. The most significant unknown variable at this time, which could impact the reopening, is related to the utility work for water and gas.
Railroad Crossings
The crossings at both Livingston Avenue and Central Avenue, and Southgate and Foley Square, have yet to be paved, as we are working through permitting with NJ Transit. NJ Transit requires a permit for any work, including paving, that occurs within or adjacent to its right-of-way (the property it owns or controls for railroad operations), which in our case is 25 feet in any direction of the tracks.
The permit allows for:
• The Safety of trains and passengers
• Safety of workers and the public
• Protection of NJ Transit infrastructure
• Maintaining train schedules
• Compliance with regulations and liability
Summer Hours
Borough Summer Hours end on Friday, August 29th. The Borough will be closed on Monday, September 1st, for Labor Day, and resume regular hours of operation, Monday-Friday, from 8:30 am-4:30 pm that week.
School
School begins on Thursday, August 28th. I would urge drivers to be extra cautious and observe posted speed limits near schools and downtown and leave additional time in the morning to ensure a safe and quick drop-off.
