The National Weather Service and multiple local forecasters warn of the following conditions:
Timing: The worst conditions are expected from early afternoon (around 2 p.m.) through late evening, with the most intense rainfall likely between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Showers may linger overnight through early Friday morning.
Rainfall Totals: Most areas should prepare for 1-3 inches of rain, but localized totals of 5-7 inches or more are possible, particularly if thunderstorms stall over the same area for extended periods. Rainfall rates could exceed 2 inches per hour, rapidly overwhelming drains and streams.
Flood Threat: Flash flooding is likely statewide, especially in urban, poor drainage, and low-lying areas. Widespread flooding, including street and river flooding, is possible. Vulnerable locations could see life-threatening conditions.
Severe Weather: In addition to flooding, isolated severe thunderstorms are possible, mainly in southern New Jersey, with damaging winds being the main concern. There may also be a risk for hail and an isolated tornado, especially during the initial storm waves.
Precautions: Avoid driving through standing water at all times—flooded roads are deadly, and water depth can be deceiving. Monitor local weather forecasts and alerts throughout the day, and adjust travel or outdoor plans accordingly. Residents in known flood-prone areas should be prepared to move to higher ground if needed.
