We’re thrilled to celebrate the many schools and municipalities within our service area that have been included among the 2025 Safe Routes to School Recognition Program winners. This recognition, awarded by the New Jersey Department of Transportation, champions towns and schools for their support of safety education, improved sidewalks, crossings, bike lanes, and other infrastructure at schools across the state.
Notably, New Providence received gold certification for three schools and the municipality in 2025. In 2024, New Providence secured approximately $534,000 for bicycle route improvements to enhance safety and accessibility for walking and biking to school.
Statewide, 357 schools and municipalities earned recognition in 2025 for implementing programs and policies that promote safe, active transportation to school—ranging from First Step to Gold levels. These awards highlight the long-standing commitment of NJDOT and partner organizations—like Avenues in Motion and fellow Transportation Management Associations across the state—to support safe, healthy, and sustainable travel options for students.
We’re proud to be part of a region moving forward with infrastructure improvements and community engagement that prioritize student safety, wellness, and environmental benefits.
Recognition is valid for three years. The full list of current Safe Routes to School Recognition Program Winners is available on the NJ Safe Routes Resource Center Website.
